Stories On My Back is an installation based on the stories the artist’s father would share with his family. Richard A. Lou’s father was a “paper son” from Canton Province, China but his father believed that he was born in Coahoma, Mississippi. As part of the oral tradition the artists children are charged with the obligation of carrying forward their grandfather’s stories of class, power, race, and assimilation.

Biography
Richard Alexander Lou was born in San Diego, CA. and raised in both San Diego and Tijuana. Richard grew up in a biracial family which was spiritually and intellectually guided by an anti-colonialist Chinese father and a culturally affirming Mexicana mother. Educated in the public schools of the Southbay area in Chula Vista and Imperial Beach, Richard would go on to receive his A.A. in Fine Art from Southwestern College, B.A. in Fine Art from California State University at Fullerton and finally an M.F.A. in Fine Art from Clemson University in South Carolina.

Your Canvas Junkie Host

I am your host at Canvas Junkie and work in several media. I design and make one of a kind sculpture you can wear or jewelry.

As well as paint, make found object sculpture and generally will chase after anything sparkly. When I was a teen my dad would introduce me as his daughter with the disclaimer of "You know artists are weird".

Now that I have seen many years of life pass by (I'm in denial about exactly how many)............. I'm happy to be known as an artist because....... life is just weird.
