Winners will be published in the November 2009 issue of Southwest Art and on the website. All winners and finalists will receive a certificate suitable for framing.

Deadline: July 1, 2009
Artists must be at least 31 years old by November 1, 2009. The contest is open to artists in the U.S. and abroad. All works must be original. Compositions based on published material or other artists’ work are NOT considered original and are not eligible. Paintings based on another person's photograph (even if it’s copyright-free) are NOT eligible. Artists must not have been previously featured in Southwest Art. Employees or associates of F+W Media, Inc., or their immediate families may not enter. Southwest Art reserves the right to reject work deemed unsuitable for publication or that does not meet above criteria.

Oakland Community College Womencenter of Farmington Hills, Michigan presents its 2009 exhibit, From Our Perspective: A National Women's Exhibition. A juried exhibit featuring two- and three-dimensional works of art. The exhibit occurs September 17 – October 9, 2009 at the Smith Theatre Gallery at Oakland Community College's Orchard Ridge campus. The gift of the artist is the way she gives us the opportunity to experience and reflect upon the world around us from a novel and unconventional perspective. Within their chosen medium, today’s women artists continue to share their unique viewpoint on the material, personal, global, political, and cultural landscapes that surround us. This exhibition commits to giving women artists a forum in which to share their singular position and outlook on the inner and outer worlds we all share. What: Performance  Come out and be an extra at LuLav in downtown Little Rock this Sunday night. We're recreating a Manhattan lively Night Club and there will be a live jazz band so dress as you seem fit.  We are also shooting in Conway on Memorial Day and need Xtras for that day.

    Occurring on the 1st weekend in August (July 31 - August 2, 2009, in conjunction with Arkansas'  new Tax-Free Holiday for back-to-school shoppers) in a newly vacated space that once served as an anchor-store within the Hot Springs Mall, Artistic Synergies will showcase a variety of artists from all corners of the Natural State in a natural shopping environment - a bustling shopping Mall. 

 

    No Rain...No Scorching Sun...A Great Location...Beautiful Art >From A Plethora of Arkansan Artists...The Perfect Art Show.

    Plenty of advertising and marketing will assure plenty of buyers - aside from the typical mall shoppers who have come to spend money.  And the good thing is we don't have to worry about the weather! 

     

    Here are some general facts about participating in Artistic Synergies Indoor Art Exposition:

     

    Artistic Synergies Indoor Art Exposition

    Location: The Hot Springs Mall 

    Dates: July 31 - August 2, 2009

    Times:     Setup from 8am-3:30pm (Friday, July 31)

                    Friday - 4pm-9pm

                    Saturday - 10am-9pm

                    Sunday - 12pm - 6pm

                    Tear-down Sunday after conclusion of show.

     

    For artists, this is the perfect venue:

     

    It's indoors! 

    - Air-conditioned, no rain-outs, no inclement weather, no dirt/dust, very secure

     

    It's in a high-traffic retail environment!  

    - High traffic even before our marketing takes effect. 

    - People are there with money, to spend money

    - Easy and accessible parking.  There is a large entrance both within the Mall and via the Mall parking lot - artists will be able to unload at curbside and walk mere feet to their space.

    - Complimentary Drayage (storage of unused boxes/crates for duration of show)

    Prices

    - $20 application fee.

    - Display Spaces will range in price from $100 to $300 depending on space requirements.

There is a $20.00 non-refundable jury fee that goes directly toward display space if selected.  The registration number to use when submitting your application is 1001.

images_copyGoogle and the Saatchi Gallery team up for new photography competition

Google has announced an open call for submissions to the Google Photography Prize, a collaboration with the Saatchi Gallery to find talented student photographers and give them unprecedented online and offline exposure. The winning submissions will be available for millions of Google users around the world to display on their personalised iGoogle homepages, and given a special exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery. The overall winner will also receive £5,000 and an invitation to spend a day with renowned photographer Martin Parr.

The competition is open to students in institutions of higher education in many countries around the world. Students can enter by submitting a series of five photographs at http://www.google.com/photographyprize by May 31. The thirty-six top entries will be selected for the shortlist and made open to an online public vote on June 11. The top six vote-winners will be flown to London for the opening night of an exhibition of their work at the Saatchi Gallery, and the ultimate winner will be decided by a panel of art critics and artists, including Idris Khan, Martin Parr, Michael Hoppen, Susanna Brown, Tim Marlow and Mariella Frostrup.

I am your host at Canvas Junkie and work in several media. I design and make one of a kind sculpture you can wear or jewelry.

As well as paint, make found object sculpture and generally will chase after anything sparkly. When I was a teen my dad would introduce me as his daughter with the disclaimer of "You know artists are weird".

Now that I have seen many years of life pass by (I'm in denial about exactly how many)............. I'm happy to be known as an artist because....... life is just weird.
