| Since 1979, Dryad Studios has been hand crafting some of the finest Arts & Crafts furniture available, from lumber we have sawn on our own mill.
Our 8000 sq ft shop is located on a mountaintop, near the Buffalo River Headwaters, south of Osage, Arkansas. We raise, log, saw, and kiln dry Quarterawn Oak lumber from our 160 acre Tree Farm. We also purchase prime logs from local landowners and the Ozark National Forest. We bring to our endeavors in furniture making a commitment to the principles, ideals and craftsmanship established in the formative period of the Arts & Crafts movement that is rarely found in any other furniture maker, large or small. We rely on tasteful design and uncompromising craftsmanship to define our view of the past and the future of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Our furniture will continue to enhance lives long after we are dust. We regard the privilege of affecting your life by our work with the utmost seriousness. The once incomparable, American furniture industry is practically nonexistent now. Even the finest names in furniture making are conducting their manufacturing overseas. I have to put on the mental brakes here, or I will devolve into an extended rant. The industry destroyed itself from within, then moved the monstrosity offshore. The Arts & Crafts Movement, at the start of the 20th century, was a repudiation of the initial elements of this decline in craftsmanship, throughout the furniture industry. Today, we stand firm in our commitment to honor the treasure that is our forests by producing a high quality product that is desirable and durable, through a process that is sustainable and ecologically sound. To view sustainability through the narrow focus of changing light bulbs, or using less gasoline is really an attempt to justify an elaborate ruse. It is the core of our lives that need to be shifted towards a more sustainable path. The interaction between craftsperson, customer, and community is a first step along one of those paths. We humanize and personalize what has become a monolithic consumption pyramid. The gratification of ownership becomes more a pleasure of involvement. At Dryad Studios, much of the path is in our rear view mirror. Since 1972 we have been interacting with our environment in a sustainable manner. Our "tree farm" produces the material for our craft. The cleared portions produce the necessities for our lives. Cheers...... |
I am your host at Canvas Junkie and work in several media. I design and make one of a kind sculpture you can wear or jewelry.
As well as paint, make found object sculpture and generally will chase after anything sparkly. When I was a teen my dad would introduce me as his daughter with the disclaimer of "You know artists are weird".
Now that I have seen many years of life pass by (I'm in denial about exactly how many)............. I'm happy to be known as an artist because....... life is just weird.
