The next show at Cantrell Gallery, “Night Owls”, an exhibit of all new paintings by John Deering, opens with a reception on Friday, November 4, 6-8:00 in the evening. This wine and cheese gathering is a great opportunity to meet and greet the artist, and view his new works. John Deering has been an editorial cartoonist and illustrator for the Arkansas Democrat Gazette since 1981. His two comic strip features, “Strange Brew” and “Zack Hill” are distributed by Creators Syndicate as are his editorial cartoons. He is also a figurative sculptor. John regrets having never entered the “Draw the Pirate” cartoon contest, seen in the back of many periodicals. If you can’t make it, the evening of the opening, please plan on coming by sometime later, while the exhibit is still up – through Saturday, December 24.

The Ketz Gallery will feature a one-man show by local artist Matthew Gore during October 21 – November 12.
An opening reception is scheduled for the month’s third Friday, October 21, 5-8pm in conjunction with Argenta Art Walk. Participants will have a chance to meet the artist and enjoy refreshments.
In his latest series of paintings entitled Modern Archaic: Reshaping the Figure, he hits on a theme of abstracting the human figure with an organic feel. Working the paintings with textures and layers gives the series an archaic feel with a modern approach. Matthew Gore is a contemporary artist based out of Little Rock, Arkansas. His work has shown regionally and nationally, and has displayed multiple exhibitions. A graduate of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, he received his art degree in 2009 with an emphasis in drawing. As a musician as well as an artist, Matthew feels the two forms of art collaborate and have intertwining processes. Building the paintings in layers, and creating music in layers share a similar theme to their approach.
In addition, Valerie Goetz will debut her new jewelry line called “Ice” that was inspired by winter and created from recycled glass. Horsehair pottery and pine needle baskets designed by Valerie will also be on display and for sale.
Located at 705 Main Street in historic Argenta, the KETZ Gallery first opened in August, 2009. The Gallery features new and emerging artists from central Arkansas. It has a wide variety of contemporary and traditional styles including oil and acrylic paintings, pottery, watercolors, pastels, photography, art glass and wood works. KETZ Gallery is regularly open Tuesday through Fridays, 11:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and 11:30 a.m. – 3 pm on Saturdays. To schedule an appointment, call 529-6330. Trinity Gallery for Arkansas ArtistsAugust 12 through November 6, 2011 Opening reception on August 12, 5 - 8 pm, in conjunction with downtown Little Rock's 2nd Friday Art Night
This unexpected pairing features new figurative drawings by El Dorado artist Jorge Villegas with Conway artist Jim Volkert’s conceptual sculpture.
In his latest series, Villegas departs from earlier abstract works and explores portraiture, observing, “I realize with surprise how much I am taken with human beauty.” His deepest memories have always been visual, from his father’s hands to the beauty in his mother’s eyes. These works acknowledge this and reflect his sentiment, “Through the eye, love attains the heart.”
Volkert’s work is the natural result of his boyhood interest in hobby shops, his studio art training, his many years as a museum professional and his fascination with “the object” and its next level of engagement. Each work starts with a painting that has caught his eye become something new.
“Some objects are machines that sit strangely at the cusp of pivotal art historical moments. Some are illogical extensions of the idea of the work,” he explains, “And some are simply referential bon-bons.” |
