John Van Horn

I suppose I have been an artist since the first picture mom ever magneted to the fridge. The satisfaction of creating something that evoked emotion in others drove me to build, create, paint, sculpt, and share my art. Thankfully, when I moved on to using power tools and dismantling large equipment for my projects, mom never even blinked.

I have been working in steel since 2001, and earned a B.A. in Sculpture in 2005. Several of my pieces have shown in local galleries, including the Arkansas Art Center. I nurture the child-side of myself, so much of my inspiration comes from this: playing with and imagining life into cold steel parts. I prefer to use recycled and found parts, and employ chemical and heat treatments to give the metal different textures and tints, instead of using paint.

A 5-year stint in retail management required a lengthy break from art, but I recently made a career change in hopes that I will have more time to devote to creative processes. At the moment, I am working toward alternative certification to become a secondary school art teacher in the Fall of 2010.

Your Canvas Junkie Host

I am your host at Canvas Junkie and work in several media. I design and make one of a kind sculpture you can wear or jewelry.

As well as paint, make found object sculpture and generally will chase after anything sparkly. When I was a teen my dad would introduce me as his daughter with the disclaimer of "You know artists are weird".

Now that I have seen many years of life pass by (I'm in denial about exactly how many)............. I'm happy to be known as an artist because....... life is just weird.
