| ~Steel is Real~
John M. Van Horn North Little Rock, Arkansas I suppose I have been an artist since the first picture mom ever magneted to the fridge. The satisfaction of creating something that evoked emotion in others drove me to build, create, paint, sculpt, and share my art. Thankfully, when I moved on to using power tools and dismantling large equipment for my projects, mom never even blinked. I have been working in steel since 2001, and earned a B.A. in Sculpture in 2005 from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Several of my pieces have shown locally, at the Bernice Sculpture Garden, the Arkansas Art Center, and in local galleries and businesses. I nurture the child-side of myself, so much of my inspiration comes from this: playing with and imagining life into cold steel parts. I prefer to use recycled and found parts, and employ chemical and heat treatments to give the metal different textures and tints, instead of using paint. A 5-year stint in retail management required a lengthy break from art, but I recently made life changes to reinvigorate my artworks. I entered the M.A. program at UALR in 2011, and continue to create and seek opportunities to display my work in the community. If you have any questions about upcoming exhibitions or projects in which I am involved, or wish to speak with me about my works, please feel free to contact me: j_van_horn@att.net |
I am your host at Canvas Junkie and work in several media. I design and make one of a kind sculpture you can wear or jewelry.
As well as paint, make found object sculpture and generally will chase after anything sparkly. When I was a teen my dad would introduce me as his daughter with the disclaimer of "You know artists are weird".
Now that I have seen many years of life pass by (I'm in denial about exactly how many)............. I'm happy to be known as an artist because....... life is just weird.
